‘Hope He Gets Time to Watch a Film Now’: PM Modi Recalls Chat with Achinta Sheuli After Weightlifter Bags Gold
Even before the Indian competitors flew to Birmingham for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was supporting them. Every time someone wins a medal at the games, he creates a tweet to congratulate them. He posted a film of his interaction with weightlifter Achinta Sheuli on Monday after the latter won the men’s 73 kg gold medal.
Sheuli won India’s third gold at the CWG 2022 on Sunday night. He lifted the yellow metal after 313 kilogrammes of collective effort. The 20-year-old Bengali was in complete command of the situation from the outset, as he was successful in all three of his snatch attempts. With his first attempt, he broke the previous games record for his category with a total weight of 309 kg, easily beating out any rivals.
On Monday, PM Modi used his official Twitter account to reflect on his conversation with Sheuli prior to the Games. He said that since the athlete had won a medal, he would now have time to see a movie.
“I spoke with Achinta Sheuli before our delegation headed to the Commonwealth Games. We had talked about the help his mother and brother provided for him. India’s Prime Minister stated on Twitter.
The Indian Prime Minister was curious to learn how the athlete maintains his composure while competing in a powerlifting match. Achinta had responded, “Sir, we practise yoga to keep the mind tranquil.
My mother and older brother have given me a lot of support in my family. My mum always supports me when we chat on the phone, he continued.
He answered, when asked if he enjoyed watching movies, “I do, but I don’t get enough time because of training.” But I do watch when I have time.
Indian wrestlers have performed admirably at the CWG, winning 6 medals so far in this round of friendly matches.
Earlier, Bindyarani Devi and Sanketh Sargar won silver medals, while Mirabai Chanu and Jeremy Lalrinunnga each won a gold medal. Gururaja Poojary won Birmingham’s lone bronze medal thus far for India.
India now owns 3 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medal after Sheuli’s triumph.
