The youthful weightlifter, Achinta, lived up to his high expectations of winning the gold medal, giving India its third gold at the CWG.
Last night, there was no sleep in Howrah Panchla village in Deulpur. The men’s 73kg weightlifting competition, which will be held at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022, had the locals hooked to their televisions. Achinta, who entered at the greatest weight in his division, was a lock for the gold. But because of how unpredictable sports are, anything can happen at any time. The youthful weightlifter, however, lived up to his high expectations and those of Deulpur, winning the gold medal with a CWG record to give India its third gold of the Games thus far. This happened not long after Jeremy Lalaringa overcame agony to win India’s second gold medal in the men’s 67kg weightlifting event.
The 20-year-victory on the international stage was the culmination of a difficult road, as is typical of most Indian athletes. Sheuli’s father was a van driver who passed away in 2014. As a father figure to Achinta, Aloke Sheuli encouraged his younger brother’s dream and gave up his own to become a weightlifter.

Achinta and his older brother were both interested in weightlifting since they were little. Aloke was interviewed by News18 following Achinta’s victory, and he remarked, “My brother and I have worked hard.” As of 2010, Astana Das trained us. I brought my brother to train with Astana Das because I wanted to pursue a career in weightlifting. I made it to the Nationals, but our father passed away in 2013. Even though I had to take care of the family, I continued my brother’s training and encouraged “Bhai” to push himself farther. We are progressing, and I now have a minor job in the fire department. We are overjoyed with Achinta’s accomplishments, and now that he has advanced, I too will give weightlifting another shot.
Day 3 of CWG 2022 Weightlifters, wrap Achinta Sheuli, Jeremy Lalrinnunga Gold for India Gain Significant Success in Team Sports
Achinta began weightlifting in 2011, and ever since then, he has been a prodigy. In the 2015 Youth Nationals, he placed fourth, and he was accepted into the Army Sports Institute. He was accepted into the Indian National Camp the same year. He trained at ASI once again in 2016 and 2017, and since then, he has been in the national camp. He won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Championship in 2015 and later added a second silver at the Asian Youth Championship in 2018. In 2019, he won both the senior and junior Commonwealth championships. He followed that up with a silver at the 2021 World Junior Championships and a gold in his weight division at the Commonwealth Senior Championships.
Achinta’s mother, Purnima Seuli, spoke to News18 while crying and said, “He has suffered and he has fought hard throughout his life.” ” I was unable to offer him anything. She continued, “He has succeeded despite his father’s [early] death.”
Locals claim that because both brothers are fighters, last night none of them slept and they were all glued to their televisions. Everyone joined the festivities as soon as he won and staged a procession to mark the young weightlifters’ achievement. Local Deulpur resident Sanjay Roy stated, “We are so happy we haven’t slept all night.”
Achinta is receiving congratulations from Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee, and other top national figures.
